As the name suggests, these flowers totally bloom only at night. Pure white in colour, these fragrant flowers start blooming around late afternoon and by the night these become full flowers with lovely fragrance. Moon flowers last the entire night and die as soon as the sun rises and the sunlight touches its petals. These are about four to six inch wide fragrant flowers that grow up to 15 feet tall and are pollinated by night flying insects.

Evening Primrose gets its name due to the fact that it opens within less than a minute in the evening. This cup shaped wild flower is about 0.78 to 2 inches wide, has four petals and eight stamens, and grows in a variety of shades like bright yellow, pink and white. It can be a great choice for any moon garden as this flower begins to glow in the dark creating a magnanimous effect.

It may sound like an oxymoron but there are many daylilies that bloom only at night. These include Moon Frolic and Toltec Sundial. While Toltec Sundial is a highly fragrant flower that is bright yellow in colour, Moon Frolics are lavender coloured flowers that are not fragrant but are quite pretty to look at.

These sweetly fragrant flowers bloom late in the afternoon post 4 pm and hence are called the Four o’ clocks. Once four o’ clocks unfurl completely, they exude a strong jasmine-like fragrance that remains throughout the night and fades away as soon as the flower closes in the morning. These trumpet shaped flowers could be found in a number of colours like blue, red, yellow, pink, white and some bi-colours too. Another interesting factor about these flowers is that they tend to change colour as they age; the white ones turn light violet and the yellow ones change to pink.

This gorgeous flower is named after Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Brahma Kamal’s petals bear an uncanny resemblance to the lotus flower’s petals. This flower starts unfurling once the sun sets and is at its beautiful best in the midnight. Brahma Kamal blooms only once a year at night time and could be found in mountains and cold areas.

This one is the only species of Orchid whose flowers bloom at night and close during the day. It is widely popular as it produces a heavenly scent in the evening and at night. Night scented Orchid consists of tiny petals which are surrounded by three narrow sepals. The flower measures about 2.5 cm across and is kind of a rare bloom.

It is needless to mention that Jasmine is one flower that is famous for its sweet fragrance. Greenish white in colour, night Jasmine is considered as the best moon garden flower. This tiny, tubular flower blooms exclusively at night spreading its strong perfume around.

These flowers are rather special for they bloom exclusively at night and can turn any regular garden in an enchanting ‘moon garden’. Plant a few of them or all of them and witness your nocturnal garden come to life as the sun sets.
